GM Toolbox: Mastering TTRPG Session Prep

Tabletop Role Playing Games (TTRPGs) such as Dungeons & Dragons, the iconic tabletop role-playing game, have captured the hearts of countless adventurers over the years. Whether you're a Dungeon Master (DM), Game Master (GM), or Keeper of Arcane Lore (Keeper), preparing a campaign or a player crafting a character, the process of preparing for a session can be a challenging yet immensely rewarding experience. Let’s chat about three common difficulties faced during session preparation and offer practical solutions to overcome them.

Difficulty 1: Crafting a Compelling Storyline

One of the most significant challenges in TTRPG or D&D session preparation is creating an engaging and immersive story line. A captivating narrative is essential to keep players invested in the game, but it can be daunting to come up with a fresh and exciting plot for each session.

Solution 1: Collaborate with Your Players

Harness the collective creativity of your players. Encourage them to share their character backstories, motivations, and aspirations before-hand. If they’re protective of the details, this can be done privately with the DM or GM. Incorporate elements from their stories into the campaign, creating personal stakes for each character. This not only ensures player engagement but also relieves the burden of crafting an entire narrative on your own.

Solution 2: Use Pre-Made Adventures

Consider using pre-made adventures and campaign modules. Wizards of the Coast, Chaosium, Free League and other publishers offer a wide range of official adventures that can be adapted to your campaign world. These modules provide you with a strong foundation to build upon while still allowing you to add your unique flavor. Some publishers even offer FREE pre-made adventures! Another great couple of resources are DriveThruRPG and Humble Bundle. They offer many publisher-made and indie-made adventures waiting for you to bring them to Life.

Difficulty 2: Balancing Encounters

Balancing encounters is a delicate art. Overwhelming your players can lead to frustration, while making encounters too easy can result in boredom. Achieving the right balance can be a daunting task, especially for new DMs and GMs.

Solution 1: Utilize Online Resources

Several online tools and calculators can help you determine encounter difficulty based on party size and level. Websites like Kobold Fight Club and D&D Beyond's Encounter Builder can save you time and effort in encounter planning, ensuring that each challenge feels just right. I’ve also found the DnD and TTRPG community’s on Reddit incredibly helpful.

Solution 2: Adapt on the Fly

It can seem daunting, especially for those DMs and GMs on the introverted side of the spectrum, but try not to be afraid of adjusting encounters in real-time during your session. If a battle is proving too easy, you can introduce reinforcements or environmental hazards to increase the challenge. On the other hand, if the party is struggling, consider giving them a lifeline or lowering the enemy's hit points.

Difficulty 3: Managing Session Flow

Maintaining the flow of a game session can be tricky. Players can be unpredictable, and it's challenging to keep the game moving at a satisfying pace. Slow sessions can lead to disengagement, while overly rushed ones may result in confusion or what I refer to as “stunted enjoyment”.

Solution 1: Set Expectations

At the start of each session, establish expectations regarding player behavior and pacing. Let your players know that the game will run more smoothly if they stay engaged and avoid lengthy tangents or off-topic discussions. This can help keep the session on track.

Solution 2: Use Visual Aids

Visual aids, such as battle maps and miniatures, can streamline combat encounters by providing a clear visual representation of the battlefield, diminishing the need to constantly “recap” where the player characters are located in relation to the environment and any friends or foes. Additionally, using images or handouts for important NPCs, locations, or objects can help players stay immersed in the story and keep track of important details. I’m a sucker for a good handout.

Preparing for a TTRPG session can present challenges, but with the right solutions and a little bit of mental constitution, you can overcome these obstacles and create a fantastic gaming experience for both yourself and your players. Remember that TTRPGs are all about having fun and embracing the unexpected, so don't be too hard on yourself when things don't go according to plan. Flexibility and creativity are key to a successful campaign, and with these strategies in mind, you'll be better-equipped to navigate the world of Dungeons & Dragons, or any other fantastical TTRPG universe, with ease.
